About the Wine

The historic Monte Rosso Vineyard is one of California’s oldest Cabernet Sauvignon plantings that dates back to 1880. Located in the Moon Mountain subregion of Sonoma Valley, it sits in the shadow of the Mayacama mountain range at 1,300 feet above sea level. This beautifully balanced Cabernet Sauvignon is made from select lots from within this amazing vineyard. Deep ruby in color, this wine leads with aromas of red currants, warmed cherry cobbler, sandal wood, cardamon, and vanilla oak. The rich palate brings notes of black plum, cassis, cola nut and coco dusted truffle. The wine finishes luxuriously with a supple mouthfeel and round tannin structure.

Viticultural Notes

Harvest of 2016 began slow and mild with favorable wet conditions throughout the winter months which led to idyllic Spring weather. Dry, sunny, and warm during the day. Breezy, foggy, and chilly during the evening hours. Combined with the rocky volcanic soils found on the slopes of the Moon Mountain region this is the perfect terroir for growing and fully ripening Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winemaking Notes

Select Cabernet Sauvignon blocks were carefully hand harvested, hand sorted, and gravity fed into small open top fermenters for cold soaking up to three days. After fermentation, the wine was racked into oak barrels to undergo its final fermentation. All blocks were kept separate until the final blend was chosen and assembled. The wine rested in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 28 months of aging.

Critical Acclaim

This is a reserved and tight Monte Rosso with bark and currant character. Wet earth. Full-bodied, balanced and extremely long. Fantastic, subtle finish. Reminds me of old Louis Martini Mountain cabs. Drink after 2022.

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard comes galloping out of the glass with notes of crème de cassis, warm plums, cast-iron pan and bouquet garni, plus touches of lavender and olives. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of muscular fruit, framed by firm, grainy tannins, finishing with an herbal lift. Rating: 95+
